Hand Ice-Dyed Tie-Dye Shirts
These are tie-dye shirts made the slow way. Maria hand ice-dyes every short-sleeve tee, long-sleeve tee, tank and racerback in her York, Pennsylvania studio. Each shirt soaks in soda ash, gets folded or scrunched by hand, is buried in ice and topped with Procion MX dye, then sits about 24 hours while the melt carries color into the cotton. As the ice melts, a single dye can split into its separate pigments, so two shirts from the same colorway share a palette but never a pattern.
Shirts are the lightest way to wear ice dye, and the details are easy to see: speckles, pigment splits and bright white space. Depending on the colorway and style, shirts are dyed on blanks like Comfort Colors, Gildan Softstyle and Bella+Canvas; check each product's details for the blank and size range. The fit is a classic unisex fit: true to size, or size up for a relaxed look. Some colorways also come in youth sizes.
Made-to-order shirts are dyed, rinsed until the water runs clear, and finished individually, usually in about 5 to 7 days in the studio. Will my shirt look exactly like the photo?
No. Made-to-order shirts follow the colorway's palette, but ice dye never repeats a pattern. Ready-to-ship listings show the actual piece.
How should I wash it?
Turn it inside out, wash cold with a mild detergent, skip bleach, and tumble dry low or hang dry. Wash it alone or with similar colors the first time. More in the ice-dye washing guide.
