About This Service

Sublimation Printing

Sublimation printing is the only decoration method that truly becomes part of the fabric. There’s no ink sitting on top of the garment, no transfer film bonded to the surface, no screen-printed layer you can feel with your fingertips. In sublimation, the ink is literally inside the polyester fibers — converted from a solid to a gas under heat and pressure, infused into the polymer chain of the fabric, and re-solidified as a permanent part of the textile itself.

The result is a print with absolutely zero hand feel. Run your fingers across a sublimated design and you feel only fabric — smooth, soft, and exactly the same texture as the unprinted areas. This makes sublimation the gold standard for performance wear, activewear, and any apparel where print comfort is paramount. It’s also the only print method that allows true all-over printing — edge-to-edge, seam-to-seam coverage where the entire garment becomes a canvas.

At Floorboard Findings, we use sublimation for specific applications where its unique properties outperform other methods. White and light-colored polyester tees that need vibrant, photographic-quality prints. Performance wear for sports teams and events. All-over print designs where the pattern covers the entire garment. And specialty items like polyester-coated accessories (mugs, mousepads, phone cases) for branded merchandise bundles.

The science is straightforward but the execution requires precision. Sublimation inks (a special formulation of dispersed dye in a liquid carrier) are printed onto a coated transfer paper at high resolution. When this paper is pressed against polyester fabric at 380–400°F with firm pressure, the solid ink particles skip the liquid phase and become gas — a process called sublimation. The gas molecules penetrate the polyester fibers, which have temporarily opened their molecular structure under heat. As the fabric cools, the fibers close, permanently trapping the dye molecules inside.

This phase-change chemistry is why sublimation prints are so durable. The dye isn’t on the surface — it’s embedded in the fiber itself. Sublimation prints don’t crack because there’s nothing to crack. They don’t peel because there’s nothing to peel. They don’t fade because the dye molecules are locked inside the polymer matrix, protected from UV degradation and wash abrasion.

The limitation of sublimation is also what defines it: it only works on polyester. The sublimation process requires a polymer fiber to absorb and trap the dye gas — cotton and natural fibers won’t bond with sublimation inks. For this reason, we reserve sublimation for poly-blend and 100% polyester blanks, and we use DTF for cotton and garment-dyed applications. Knowing which method to use for which project is exactly the kind of expertise that comes from producing thousands of custom garments in our York, PA studio.

How It Works

Our Techniques

Sublimation at Floorboard Findings follows a temperature-critical process where every degree and every second of press time affects the final result.

Design Preparation: Sublimation printing uses a unique color profile (not standard CMYK). We convert your design to our sublimation ICC profile, which accounts for the color shift that occurs during the gas-phase transfer. Colors that look correct on screen won’t always translate directly — reds tend to shift orange, and some blues deepen. Our color profiling compensates for these shifts so the final pressed product matches your intended design.

Transfer Paper Printing: We print onto Beaver TexPrint sublimation paper using Sawgrass SubliJet inks at maximum resolution. The paper coating is engineered to release 99%+ of the ink during pressing — cheap transfer papers retain ink and produce washed-out results. We inspect every printed sheet for ink coverage uniformity before pressing.

Pressing Protocol: Our large-format heat press is calibrated at 385°F with heavy pressure (approximately 40 PSI). The transfer paper is taped to the polyester blank to prevent shifting during pressing. Press time varies by fabric weight: 45 seconds for lightweight performance tees, 55 seconds for standard weight, 60 seconds for fleece and sweatshirts. The moment the press opens, the paper is removed quickly to prevent ghosting (unwanted secondary image transfer from paper movement).

Post-Press Handling: Freshly sublimated garments are hung immediately to prevent contact transfer — the fabric is still hot enough that any contact with another surface could transfer residual dye gas. We allow a 5-minute cool-down period before folding and packaging.

Quality Standards: We check every sublimated piece for color vibrancy (comparing to our reference swatch), coverage completeness (no white spots or under-saturated areas), and pressing artifacts (scorching, pressure lines, or ghosting). Any piece that doesn’t meet our standards is pulled and reprinted.

Quality Materials

Premium Blanks We Use

Polyester Performance Tees

100% polyester moisture-wicking tees are the ideal sublimation canvas. The full polyester content ensures maximum dye absorption and the most vibrant color reproduction.

Bella Canvas 3001 (White)

The poly-cotton blend accepts sublimation ink with a slightly muted, vintage effect. The cotton fibers don’t absorb dye, creating a heathered look that many customers prefer for its softer aesthetic.

Polyester Crewneck Sweatshirts

All-over sublimation on polyester fleece creates premium-looking sweatshirts with edge-to-edge pattern coverage. Popular for streetwear brands and bold merchandise.

Specialty Items

Polyester-coated mugs, mousepads, tote bags, and phone cases. Sublimation onto hard goods and accessories for branded merchandise bundles and gift sets.

Simple Process

How to Order

01

Design Review & Color Proofing

Submit your design and we’ll optimize it for sublimation output. Colors are adjusted for the sublimation color profile, which differs from CMYK screen display. We provide a color proof for approval.

02

Transfer Printing

Your design is printed at high resolution onto sublimation transfer paper using specialized dye-sublimation inks. Print quality is inspected for ink density, color accuracy, and coverage uniformity.

03

Heat Press Transfer

Transfer paper is positioned on the polyester blank and pressed at 385°F with firm pressure for 45–60 seconds. The ink sublimates (solid → gas → solid) and permanently bonds with the polyester fibers.

04

Inspection & Shipping

Each piece is inspected for color vibrancy, coverage completeness, and any pressing artifacts. Approved pieces are folded, packed, and shipped with tracking.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked

Why does sublimation only work on polyester?

Sublimation ink converts to gas under heat and bonds with polymer (plastic) fibers at a molecular level. Cotton, linen, and other natural fibers don’t have the polymer structure needed to trap sublimation dye. For cotton blanks, we use DTF transfers instead, which produce excellent results on any fabric.

Can you sublimate on dark-colored fabrics?

No. Sublimation inks are transparent — there’s no white ink in sublimation. On dark fabrics, the design would be invisible because the dye molecules absorb into fibers that are already saturated with dark pigment. Sublimation works best on white or very light polyester. For dark fabrics, DTF is the better choice.

What’s the difference between sublimation and DTF on a white poly tee?

On a white polyester tee, sublimation produces a print with zero hand feel — the ink is inside the fiber, not on top. DTF produces a soft-but-tangible printed film on the surface. Sublimation colors are slightly more vibrant on 100% poly. Both methods are extremely durable. Choose sublimation for maximum comfort and vibrancy; choose DTF if you also need to print on cotton blanks with the same design.

Can you do all-over sublimation prints?

Yes. Sublimation is the only print method that can cover an entire garment — front, back, sleeves, and sides — with a seamless pattern. We can sublimate pre-cut panels for true edge-to-edge all-over prints, or press onto finished garments for placement prints.

How do sublimation prints hold up over time?

Sublimation prints are essentially permanent. Because the dye is part of the fiber itself, it cannot crack, peel, or chip. Colors remain vibrant for the life of the garment. The only gradual change is slight fading with extended UV exposure (like any dyed fabric), which takes years of regular sun exposure to become noticeable.
