DTF Transfer Printing Services for Apparel & Merchandise

DTF — Direct-to-Film — transfer printing has fundamentally changed what’s possible in custom apparel decoration. At Floorboard Findings, we adopted DTF technology early because it solved the limitations that frustrated us with every other print method: screen printing’s color restrictions, sublimation’s fabric limitations, and heat transfer vinyl’s lack of detail.

About This Service

DTF Transfer Printing

DTF — Direct-to-Film — transfer printing has fundamentally changed what’s possible in custom apparel decoration. At Floorboard Findings, we adopted DTF technology early because it solved the limitations that frustrated us with every other print method: screen printing’s color restrictions, sublimation’s fabric limitations, and heat transfer vinyl’s lack of detail. DTF does it all — full-color, photo-quality prints on any fabric color, any fabric blend, with a soft hand feel that doesn’t crack, peel, or fade.

The science behind DTF is elegant. Your design is printed in full CMYK color plus a white ink base layer onto a specially coated PET (polyethylene terephthalate) film. While the ink is still wet, a fine thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) adhesive powder is applied and melted onto the back of the print. This creates a flexible, self-contained transfer that can be heat-pressed onto virtually any fabric surface. When pressed at the correct temperature and pressure — which varies by fabric type, and which we’ve calibrated precisely for every blank we use — the TPU adhesive melts into the fabric fibers, creating a permanent mechanical bond.

The result is a print that’s soft, flexible, and stretches with the garment. Unlike screen print plastisol that sits rigidly on top of the fabric, a well-executed DTF transfer moves naturally with the cotton or poly fibers underneath. Your customers can feel the print, but it doesn’t feel like a sticker — it feels like part of the shirt. This is critical for premium branded merchandise where the quality of the print affects the perceived value of the product.

What makes our DTF printing different from online print shops is the calibration and quality control. We test every design on the actual blank before running the full order. We’ve documented the optimal press settings for every blank in our catalog — temperature, pressure, dwell time, and peel temperature all affect final print quality. A Comfort Colors 1717 requires different settings than a Bella Canvas 3001 because the garment-dyed surface absorbs adhesive differently than a standard-dyed blank. These details are what separate a DTF print that lasts 50+ washes from one that starts peeling after 10.

We offer DTF printing both as a complete service (we print and press onto blanks we provide) and as transfer-only production (we print the transfers and ship them to you for pressing). Transfer-only orders are popular with boutique owners who want to press on demand, reducing inventory risk by only producing shirts as they sell.

Every DTF transfer we produce is printed at 1440 DPI resolution with 8-pass printing for maximum ink density. We use premium DTF inks and films — not the cheap alternatives flooding the market from overseas suppliers. The difference is visible in color vibrancy, edge definition, and washability. When your brand is on the shirt, the print quality is non-negotiable.

How It Works

Our Techniques

DTF printing at Floorboard Findings follows a precise, multi-step workflow that we’ve refined through thousands of production runs. Every variable in the process affects the final product quality.

Film Printing: Designs are RIP’d (Raster Image Processed) through specialized DTF software that separates the CMYK color layers and generates the white underbase. The white layer prints first onto the PET film, followed by the color layers on top. We use 8-pass print mode for maximum ink density — this takes longer than cheaper 4-pass mode but produces visibly richer colors and better opacity on dark blanks.

Powder Application: Immediately after printing, TPU adhesive powder is applied evenly across the wet ink surface. The powder grain size matters — we use medium-fine powder (80–100 micron) which provides excellent adhesion without excessive thickness. Excess powder is shaken off, leaving adhesive only where ink was deposited.

Curing: The powdered film passes through our curing oven at 230°F, melting the TPU powder into a smooth adhesive layer bonded to the ink. Proper curing is critical — under-cured transfers peel prematurely; over-cured transfers become brittle and crack.

Heat Pressing: Each blank is pre-pressed to remove moisture and wrinkles (3 seconds at 300°F). The transfer is positioned, pressed at the calibrated settings for that specific blank (typically 300–315°F for 12–15 seconds at medium pressure), then peeled either hot or cold depending on the design. We hot-peel for most designs as it produces a more matte, fabric-like finish. Cold-peel produces a glossier surface preferred for some full-color photographic prints.

Post-Press: After the initial press and peel, we do a final press with a Teflon sheet (5 seconds, light pressure) to smooth the print surface and fully seal the adhesive edges. This step is skipped by many DTF printers but significantly improves wash durability and edge definition.

Quality Materials

Premium Blanks We Use

Comfort Colors 1717

DTF transfers on garment-dyed cotton are our specialty. The textured surface creates a premium, vintage-look print that big-box printers can’t replicate because they don’t calibrate for garment-dyed blanks.

Bella Canvas 3001

The smooth, tight weave of Bella Canvas produces the sharpest DTF detail reproduction. Ideal for designs with fine text, intricate logos, or photographic elements.

Gildan 18000

Heavyweight crewneck for DTF printing at scale. The fleece interior provides excellent adhesive purchase for durable prints that withstand heavy wear.

Any Blank You Provide

DTF’s versatility means it works on cotton, polyester, blends, nylon, and more. If you supply your own blanks, we’ll run test presses to dial in the perfect settings.

Simple Process

How to Order

01

Submit Your Artwork

Send your design as a vector file (AI, SVG, EPS) or high-resolution PNG (300+ DPI, transparent background). We’ll review and optimize the file for DTF output.

02

Test Print Approval

We produce a test transfer and press it onto your selected blank. You approve the color accuracy, size, placement, and hand feel before we run the full order.

03

Production & Pressing

Transfers are printed, powdered, and cured. Each blank is individually pressed with settings calibrated for that specific fabric. We press-and-peel, then inspect every piece.

04

Quality Control & Ship

Each pressed garment is inspected for adhesion quality, color accuracy, and alignment. Orders are folded, packed, and shipped with full tracking information.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked

What’s the difference between DTF and DTG printing?

DTG (Direct-to-Garment) prints ink directly onto the fabric using a modified inkjet printer. DTF prints onto a film first, then transfers to the garment. DTF produces more vibrant colors on dark fabrics, has better washability, works on more fabric types, and costs less per print. DTG is being phased out by most professional printers in favor of DTF for these reasons.

Can I order just the transfers without pressing?

Yes. Transfer-only orders are popular with boutique owners who want to press shirts on demand using their own heat press. We’ll provide the recommended press settings for your blanks. Minimum transfer-only order is 25 sheets.

How detailed can the prints be?

Our DTF prints reproduce at 1440 DPI — that’s photo-quality resolution. Fine text as small as 6pt, gradient blends, photographic images, and intricate illustrations all reproduce cleanly. If your screen can display it, our DTF printer can print it.

Do DTF prints feel heavy on the fabric?

A properly produced DTF transfer has a soft, flexible hand feel — you can feel a slight texture, but it moves with the garment and doesn’t feel plasticky. The key is proper adhesive powder application (not too much) and correct press temperature (not too hot). Over-pressing causes stiffness; under-pressing causes peeling. We’ve dialed in the sweet spot for every blank we use.

Can you color-match to Pantone or specific brand colors?

We print in CMYK, which covers a wide color gamut but cannot reproduce every Pantone shade exactly. For brand-critical color matching, we produce test prints for your approval before running the full order. Most customers find our CMYK reproduction more than sufficient for branded merchandise.
