Handmade in York, PA — Each Piece One of a Kind

Hand holding a stack of folded pink and orange ice-dyed apparel

Wholesale Hand Ice-Dyed Apparel for Boutiques & Retailers

Ice dyeing isn’t tie dye. It’s an entirely different art form, and it’s the technique that built Floorboard Findings from a kitchen-table Etsy shop into a wholesale supplier serving boutiques across the East Coast. The process starts with premium garment-dyed blanks — Comfort Colors crewnecks, Bella Canvas tees, Gildan hoodies — soaked in a soda ash solution that opens the cotton fibers to bond permanently with fiber-reactive dye.

About This Service

Ice Dye Wholesale

Ice dyeing isn’t tie dye. It’s an entirely different art form, and it’s the technique that built Floorboard Findings from a kitchen-table Etsy shop into a wholesale supplier serving boutiques across the East Coast.

The process starts with premium garment-dyed blanks — Comfort Colors crewnecks, Bella Canvas tees, Gildan hoodies — soaked in a soda ash solution that opens the cotton fibers to bond permanently with fiber-reactive dye. Each blank is then manipulated by hand: crumpled, folded, twisted, or laid flat depending on the pattern Maria wants to coax out of the fabric. Ice is mounded on top, sometimes two or three layers deep, and powdered Procion MX dye is carefully sprinkled across the surface.

What happens next is pure chemistry meeting artistry. As the ice melts — slowly, over 24 hours in our York, PA studio — it carries the dye particles down through the fibers in unpredictable rivulets. Colors split into their component pigments: a single dye called "Boysenberry" might fracture into deep plum, rose pink, and pale lavender. "Jade" separates into teal, seafoam, and golden chartreuse. This pigment-splitting effect is what gives ice-dyed apparel its signature watercolor aesthetic — rich, layered, and impossible to duplicate.

After the dye sets for a full 24 hours, each piece goes through multiple rinse cycles in our industrial washers, removing all excess dye until the water runs clear. The result is colorfast apparel that holds up to years of machine washing without fading. We don’t cut corners on this step — a garment that bleeds color in your customer’s first wash destroys trust, and we’ve built our wholesale reputation on reliability.

Every single piece that leaves our studio is genuinely one-of-a-kind. Even when we produce a batch of 50 crewnecks in the same colorway, each one develops its own pattern — its own rivers of color, its own depth and contrast. For boutique owners, this means your inventory is inherently exclusive. No customer will ever walk into another store and see the exact same piece on the rack. That exclusivity is what drives repeat wholesale orders and gives your shop a competitive edge over mass-produced inventory.

Our wholesale ice dye program is designed for boutique owners who want artisan-quality product without the unpredictability of working with hobbyist dyers. We maintain consistent quality standards across every batch, use only premium blanks that your customers will reach for again and again, and ship on reliable timelines so you can plan your floor sets with confidence.

How It Works

Our Techniques

The ice dye technique we use at Floorboard Findings is a refined version of a method that’s been practiced by fiber artists for decades, but we’ve developed our own approach through years of experimentation in our York, PA studio.

Soda Ash Pre-Soak: Every blank is soaked in a soda ash (sodium carbonate) solution for 20–30 minutes before dyeing. This raises the pH of the fabric, which is essential for fiber-reactive dyes to form permanent covalent bonds with cellulose fibers. Without this step, dye washes out — it’s the difference between professional-grade results and a craft project.

Fabric Manipulation: How the fabric is arranged before icing determines the final pattern. A tight crumple creates dense, complex patterns with lots of white space. A flat lay with gentle folds produces broad watercolor washes. We use different manipulation techniques for different products — crewnecks get scrunched for high-contrast patterns, while baby items get gentle folds for softer color transitions.

Ice Layering & Dye Application: We use filtered ice — not crushed ice from a machine, which melts too quickly. The ice is mounded over the fabric on elevated racks, and powdered Procion MX dye is applied with precision. We’ve spent years learning exactly how much dye to apply per square inch for optimal saturation without muddiness.

The 24-Hour Set: Patience is everything. The ice needs a full 24 hours to melt completely and carry the dye deep into the fibers. Rushing this step by dyeing in a warm room produces flat, washed-out results. Our studio temperature is controlled for consistent, slow melting.

Rinsing Protocol: After the set time, excess dye is rinsed in cold water, then warm water, then washed in our industrial machines with a professional textile detergent. We rinse until the water runs completely clear — this typically takes 3–4 cycles. The result is a garment that won’t bleed on your customers’ other laundry.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked

Can I request specific colors for my ice dye wholesale order?

Absolutely. You can choose from our existing colorways or request custom color combinations. Keep in mind that ice dye produces organic, unpredictable patterns — we can guarantee the color palette but not exact placement. That’s what makes each piece one-of-a-kind.

What’s the minimum order for wholesale ice dye?

Our minimum wholesale order is 12 pieces per style. You can mix sizes within a style and colorway. For custom colorway development, we recommend starting with a sample order of 6 pieces so you can see the palette in person before committing to a larger run.

How do I care for ice-dyed garments?

Machine wash cold, inside out, with like colors. Tumble dry low or hang dry. Avoid bleach and fabric softener. Our fiber-reactive dyes form a permanent chemical bond with the cotton fibers, so colors stay vibrant wash after wash when cared for properly.

Do you offer hang tags or custom labeling for boutiques?

We can include care instruction cards and branded tissue paper wrapping with your order. Custom hang tags and relabeling are available for orders of 50+ pieces — contact us for pricing.

What if a piece doesn’t meet quality standards?

Every piece goes through our quality inspection before shipping. If a garment has uneven dye coverage, blank defects, or doesn’t meet our standards, we pull it from the order and replace it. You’ll never receive a piece we wouldn’t proudly wear ourselves.
