Handmade in York, PA — Each Piece One of a Kind

When someone reaches out about custom tie dye for events, the conversation usually starts the same way: "I want something for our group that actually feels special." Not another matching screen-printed tee that everyone tosses into their pajama drawer after the weekend. Something they will actually wear again. That is exactly what custom ice-dyed apparel delivers, and it is one of my favorite types of orders to produce in my York, PA studio.
Ice dye works differently than the tie dye you remember from summer camp. Powdered Procion MX dye is sprinkled over ice that sits on top of the garment, and as the ice melts over 24 hours, it carries the dye through the fabric in organic, unpredictable streams. Colors split into their component pigments. A single dye can fracture into three or four distinct shades. The result is a watercolor effect that looks nothing like the spiral patterns most people picture when they hear "tie dye." Every piece comes out genuinely one-of-a-kind, even when an entire batch is dyed in the same colorway.
The process for group event orders is simple, and I walk every customer through it personally. There is no automated form or call center. You work directly with me from start to finish.
Step one: pick your colorway. This is the fun part. You tell me the vibe, and I help translate that into dye colors that will work together on ice. If you have a wedding palette with dusty rose and sage, I know which Procion MX dyes will split into those tones. If your bachelorette party wants bold and bright, I have combinations like Hot Pink + Turquoise that stop people mid-scroll on social media. My guide to ice dye color combinations walks through the science behind which palettes work and why, but the short version is that I use my art degree in color theory every single day in the studio.
Step two: choose your blanks and sizes. I dye on premium blanks (Comfort Colors crewnecks, Bella Canvas tees, Gildan hoodies) because the blank quality matters as much as the dye work. For most event orders, crewneck sweatshirts are the top pick. They feel special, they layer easily, and people actually reach for them again months after the event. I collect sizes from your group and batch the order so everyone gets their fit.
Step three: I dye your order. Each piece is individually manipulated, iced, and dyed by hand. The dye sets for a full 24 hours, then every garment goes through multiple rinse cycles in my industrial washers until the water runs clear. This means the colors are permanent and colorfast. No bleeding in the wash.
Step four: quality check and ship. I inspect every piece for color saturation and pattern quality before packing. Typical turnaround for event orders is 2 to 3 weeks from the time you confirm your colors and sizes, so plan ahead. Rush orders are possible for smaller groups if the timeline is tight.
Bachelorette party orders are consistently my most popular event category, and I understand why. The group is usually 6 to 15 people, the budget per person is reasonable, and everyone wants the weekend documented on social media. Matching ice-dyed crewnecks photograph well because the organic color patterns catch light differently in every shot. No two sweatshirts look exactly the same, but they all clearly belong together. Coordinated without being costumey.
The most requested bachelorette colorways tend to be soft and feminine: Dusty Rose + Mushroom for a romantic feel, Lilac + Turquoise for a dreamy look, or Boysenberry + Tangerine for a sunset palette. Some brides-to-be want theirs dyed in a slightly different colorway to stand out from the group, like a white or ivory base while the rest of the crew is in color, for example.
You can also pair ice-dyed apparel with a custom DTF graphic pressed right over the dye. I have done bachelorette crewnecks with the bride's last name, the date, or the destination printed over the ice dye pattern. The combination of hand-dyed color and a crisp printed graphic is something off-the-rack party gear cannot touch.
Wedding party orders are a different energy than bachelorette weekends. These are usually gifts from the bride or groom to their wedding party: bridesmaids, groomsmen, or the whole crew. The colorway typically matches the wedding palette, and the pieces serve as getting-ready outfits for the morning of the wedding, then transition into everyday wear after.
I have dyed bridesmaid crewnecks in custom sage and ivory palettes, groomsmen hoodies in charcoal and navy tones, and full wedding party sets where each side gets their own colorway but the aesthetic is cohesive. If you are already working with specific wedding colors, send me the hex codes or Pantone swatches and I will pull the closest Procion MX dyes.
Beyond weddings and bachelorette parties, I regularly fill orders for family reunions, milestone birthday parties, school groups, and team-building events. The format is the same: pick your colors, pick your blanks, give me your sizes, and I handle the rest.
Family reunion orders are particularly fun because the size range is wide — toddler tees on Rabbit Skins blanks all the way up to adult 3XL crewnecks. Seeing a family photo where everyone from the two-year-old to the grandparents is wearing the same ice-dyed colorway is the kind of thing that makes this work rewarding.
Birthday party groups tend to be smaller (8 to 12 people) and often lean toward bolder color choices. The birthday person usually picks the palette, and I have had requests ranging from rainbow cascades to monochromatic charcoal. There are no wrong answers when it comes to color — just combinations that work better than others on ice, and that is where my color theory background keeps things on track.
Here is the honest timeline for event orders:
I recommend getting sizes locked in early. Chasing down sizing info from 14 people is always the step that takes longest, and it has nothing to do with the dye process.
If you are planning a bachelorette weekend, wedding party gift, family reunion, or any group event and want apparel that is actually worth keeping, send me a message with your event date, approximate group size, and any color ideas you have in mind. I will walk you through options and give you a quote within a day or two.
You can also browse our ready-to-ship ice dye collection to see examples of what different colorways look like on finished garments. Every piece there was hand-dyed using the same process and the same quality standards that go into every event order. And if you want to learn more about what makes certain color combinations work, my color theory guide breaks it all down from an art school perspective.
