Ice Dye Crewneck Sweatshirt

This is an undyed white blank, not a finished piece: a Gildan Softstyle Midweight crewneck sweatshirt (SF000) in sizes Small through 4X. It is 8.4 oz per square yard, 80/20 ring-spun cotton and polyester with a 100 percent ring-spun cotton face, cut in a classic fit with a dropped shoulder and 1x1 rib cuffs and bottom band.

That cotton face is the reason I stock this blank for dyeing. Procion MX dye bonds to cotton and slides off polyester, so a fabric with a full cotton surface takes color cleanly and holds it through the rinse. The midweight fleece also has enough body to hold a fold, which is what gives ice dye its crystal-like divisions rather than a flat wash.

These blanks are stocked in my studio in York, Pennsylvania, and they are the same ones I dye myself. There is a tear-away label if you are relabeling. Once you have dyed and rinsed the piece, wash it cold and inside out, then hang or tumble dry low.
